A major objective in establishing Indian Institutes of Information Technology (IIITs) is also to set up a model of education which can produce best-in-class human resources in IT and harnessing the multidimensional facets of IT in various domains. These are conceived as research -led institutions contributing significantly to the global competitiveness of key sectors of the Indian economy and industry with application of IT in selected domain areas. While the number of students produced by these IIITs may be small, the impact they are likely to create will be substantial.
