CHAPTER VIII M.PHIL / DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY [Act S.5 (1) & (2)] Minimum Standards and Procedure for Award of M.PHIL./Ph.D Degrees as per UGC Regulation, 2016 The Admission Committee shall interview candidates for M.Phil/Ph.D. admissions. It may co- opt such additional members of the faculty, as may be necessary, for interviewing candidates, as members for Admission Committee. All faculty members who are available on duty shall be involved in the evaluation process, subject to condition that their near relatives are not candidates for the courses offered by the School/Department. Besides all admission committees shall consist of - i. An SC/ST and OBC faculty member may be included in the Department Research Committee whenever there is candidate from any of these categories. ii. If no SC/ST or OBC faculty member is available in any particular Department, a member may be co- opted from another Department within the same School; iii. If no SC/ST for OBC faculty member is available at the School level also one member from any outside institution within the twin cities be coopted. iv. SC/ST or OBC representatives nominated from outside the 9.9 The Institutions shall develop appropriate methods so as to complete the entire process of evaluation of M.Phil. dissertation/ Ph.D. thesis within a period of six months from the date of submission of the dissertation/thesis. In addition to the above, the following regulations shall govern the M.Phil/Ph.D. courses of study: Attendance: A student shall be deemed to have pursued a regular course of study in a subject provided that he has attended atleast 75% of the classes actually held in each subject and do to the satisfaction of the School/Department/Centre, such seminars, sessional and practicals as may be prescribed. 9 · 9 The Institutions shall develop appropriate methods so as to complete the entire process of evaluation of M.Phil. dissertation/ Ph.D. thesis within a period of six months from the date of submission of the dissertation/thesis.
2 · Original report to be retained by the School/Department/Centre till the duration of the Ph.D. course of the student.
1 · The similarity index for all dissertations, i.e Ph.D, M.Phil. and M.Tech, shall be capped at 15% .
2 · If a student is the first author, the similarity index of that publication is to be ignored while calculating the overall similarity index
3 · Where the student is not the first author, the matter shall be taken up on a case by case basis on the recommendation of the supervisor and the HoD/ Dean of the school.
4 · Either the paper published or the acceptance letter and abstract on the journals letter head/ official e -mail shall be required to be enclosed along with the thesis as annexure. This may also be mentioned in every chapter, if applicable, along with the details of the journal where the paper was previously published.
6 · All efforts may be made so that the thesis should not be a mere reproduction of the publications. The practice of using the complete extract of the publications in the dissertations is to be discouraged and the supervisors should encourage the students to rewrite their papers.
