Madam/ Sir, As you are aware, the Scheme of Medical Certification of Cause of Death (MCCD) falling under the legal ambit of Registration of Births & Deaths (RED) Act, 1969 i id is aimed at providing the cause~specific flmflzflity'profile across d l different age groups at yp the State and National levemthe scheme is restricted to major hospitals and hospitals attached to medical colleges located mostly in urban areas. Moreover, the coverage of the scheme is also not uniform across the States/ U'i's. Consequently, the .data on cause specific mortality generated under the scheme suffers on account of reliability, representativeness and comparability over the period of time. The present coverage of p medically certified deaths to the total registered deaths is 17 percent and only 8 percent against the total estimated deaths.
